From my comment below:

So the main character's kid is on the spectrum and because of this he's able to figure out the alien language and software and basically become king of plot reveals. At one point Munn's character says something really obvious like, "You know some people don't believe Autism is a crutch but the next step in evolution."

At the end when the Predator challenges all the remaining characters to a hunt he says that there's only one true warrior among them and names the main character and says his spine will be his trophy. Later, we find out he meant the kid (he used the character's last name) and that they actually collect spines for the spinal fluid to help upgrade their own species. So his plan was to take the kid's spine and use it to upgrade the other Predators.

At the end when the Predator challenges all the remaining characters to a hunt he says

Wait. Did the Predator talk in this movie?

Yeah I haven't seen this movie so I'm not sure if there's just nobody in it or if IMDB just had the cast list in a really weird order. Like five names down I became skeptical and started fishing for bigger names to put in there.

Think they probably meant it was one of the movies released in a new resurgence of parody movies at the time, like the Scary Movie series, Undercover Brother, Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans, Disaster Movie, etc.

Not sure what you're talking about Undercover Brother is a very serious film.

This was the worst thing a movie can be: boring.

I don't mean to sound harsh, I didn't hate the movie. But, God, we just never learned anything interesting and 80% of the scares in the movie were the same camera pan to an object or person that is no longer there trick. Like how many times do you expect me to get scared seeing a nun walking or seeing a nun disappear in an uninterrupted shot?

The acting was fine, but the characters were also super boring. Very one dimensional. You've got the demon hunter priest who isn't even cool enough to actually call himself a demon hunter and the only cool thing he does the entire movie is make that fire cross which was totally implausible considering how lighter fluid works. You had the guy who bangs everything and wants to bang this young nun but is only good for cliche punch lines. And the nun who's entire character was someone who was considering being a nun but not 100% sure. I honestly thought the dinosaurs in the classroom intro was, like, the most ridiculous way to show us that she's not your average nun. There was no other side to these characters and we never learned anything about them. It was just them in creepy situations that failed to get a reaction out of me.

And maybe that would have been okay if we were learning anything new, but there's so much dead space in this movie. The first half is them being told they can't investigate until the next day so they all spend the night and get individually spooked. They don't learn anything in this time, and neither do we, it's just spooky situations. Just not enough to hold my attention.

Then the guy gets buried and after I'm done trying to figure out how quickly a 90 lb nun could really dig up a grave under hard ground, they find the books in the coffin. But why? How or why did they get there? Were they there when he got in? IDK but thank God we have a chance to learn something.

Except it's still nothing new. We learn the name of the demon which we already know if you're a fan of this series. The nuns tell the main nun how the place got haunted and how to stop it, but then we find out all the nuns were actually dead? And it begged the question if all the nuns there were the demon playing tricks, why would it tell the main nun how to kill it? Why was that information revealed by a character later revealed to be a demon trick?

And how did that vial of Christ blood work? How did the guy get to it so quickly to rub it on the nun's face? It seemed pretty secure in there. There just seemed to be a lot of moments in this move that weren't logically thought out and they were glossed over.

I was hoping to at least be entertained but I just wasn't? There were a couple funny moments but most of the movie is just boring because we know all the tricks the filmmakers are gonna use to try and scare us and the characters are boring.

Next to the Conjuring films and even the newest Annabelle movie this was disappointing.

4/10

And it begged the question if all the nuns there were the demon playing tricks, why would it tell the main nun how to kill it?

I understood this as the main nun (Irene) having visions. She's pretty much just talking to herself when having conversations with the "live" nuns. The moment the priest joins her, her visions go away and we start seeing the nuns that are actually manifested by the demon (blacked out faces, whispering, attacking).

That's fair, although still kind of bugs me because we saw her getting a vision during the cemetary scene and it had a special effect to it. Having her visions look like totally normal conversations and interactions seems like they just didn't put enough thought into it to me, but that definitely makes more sense than Valak telling them how to hill him.

Really, only one of the last five BP winners is what I’d call “Oscar bait” (Spotlight). 12 Years a Slave is unflinching and personal. Birdman is well and truly weird. Moonlight is artistic and intimate. And The Shape Of Water is just a straight-faced reimagining of The Creature from the Black Lagoon (and I love it for that).

You shut your mouth Spotlight is the best winner of the last decade.

1 point · 22 days ago · edited 22 days ago

I didn’t say it wasn’t good, just that it’s the only recent BP winner that felt like it was “supposed” to win.

It was definitely the underdog that year. Everyone had their money on Revenant, which even won Best Director and even though it's more common now those used to go hand-in-hand. Ruffalo didn't win supporting actor, I think the only award it won was screenplay and then it got Best Picture. It was a huge surprise.

If you mean because it was about a social issue then I suppose I get what you're saying but if you watch it it certainly doesn't feel like it was made just to get an award. There's real intention to it.

I can't believe this has five upvotes.

OUR TIME HAS COME.

DO YOU GUYS. WANT SOME COOOKIIIEEESSSS.

Not the guy you're replying to, but I thought I'd share my thought, as I didn't like the film.

I felt that BlacKkKlansman completely missed the mark.

As a movie, I found it incredibly dull. The direction is flat, the colors are muted, there's no dramatic thrust, nor any real suspense. A lot of it is just people talking with the most lifeless cinematography. The editing is often confusingly handled, which greatly affect the pacing, with some scenes going on for far too long, and some being too short.

The characters are all lame too. Washington and Driver do a fine job and there are some interesting themes explored about where your true identity lies and how much it has to do with your background. These themes aren't really developed, or resolved, though. You could tell there were four screenwriters, because it feels all over the place.

Since the film is boring and the characters are non-starters, all it has to fall back on is its themes and message, which is not nuanced or interesting at all. It all seems to boil down to, "Racism is bad and it's still around." Yes, we know racism is bad and still around. The question I ask you, Spike Lee, is what solution are offering in order to fix this problem of racism?

I don't see one here. It's just "racism is bad". It accomplished nothing on a narrative level, nor a social commentary level.

Why does Spike Lee have to solve society's systemic issues in order to make a movie worth watching? Racism is bad, and it's still around. Doesn't that seem like a theme worth making a movie over? If racism is still around, shouldn't we have more films and media condemning it rather than saying well we can't solve it in two hours let's choose another subject.

I just don't understand this criticism. You don't have to have all the answers to shed some light on an issue. Saying a movie that doesn't solve issues shouldn't talk about issues is like saying ignoring the issue is okay because there's no apparent or easy solve.

As for the characters and the plot, I dunno. I liked it. I tend to give based off a true story movies more of a pass on these subjects because they don't have full control over them, although I'm aware the film takes liberties.

Any time we've tried this and left it up to voting we always have gotten the same movies. Drive, Dark Knight, Fight Club, etc. We used to do a monthly theme dedicated to a director or genre the mods would pick but then people started calling us pretentious and then we ran out of ideas after like two years.

Long story short, it's a lot of work for us and all we get in return is criticism either because we don't choose the right movies or the sub doesn't. Someone started a subreddit for this, I think it's called /r/movieclub, but I'm not sure if they're still active because this is the kind of idea everyone likes but no one actually participates in.

I'm pretty sure its a joke review.

It's actually pretty interesting. I don't remember the exact story but something along the lines of someone who helped write the novel Thunderball was based off of sued Eon for not giving him credit/pay so to shut him up they gave him the movie rights to that and when he wanted to cash in he went ahead and remade Thunderball but called it Never Say Never and miraculously got Sean Connery on board even though Eon had already moved on to the next actor. So it looks like a Bond movie and is basically a remake of a Bond movie but isn't actually part of the series.

Eeehhhhhhh

Unbreakable is a great movie but it was a little dry for general audiences. It wasn't until Signs that people started to really believe in the talent and the term "the next Spielberg" started getting thrown around. Sixth Sense was a huge part of it but Unbreakable wasn't a huge hit like Sixth was and Signs would be.

I would also say that the key wasn't Willis. I think the issue was that he became popular for his twists, but when you expect a twist no twist will do. This started showing when The VIllage came under heavy criticism even though it was a perfectly good movie, everyone focused on the "aha" moment and it was never good enough.

Dude he is a successful good looking man.

He gets his heart broken yes. But if pulled himself back together he'd get many more oppurtunities.

In movies you have to look past that. Everyone is successful and good looking in movies because that's who we like to watch. The tragedy is his loneliness and what happens to his character. Don't write off the events of the movie because George Clooney looks like George Clooney.

Man you guys are really annoying tonight. I tried researching this issue and posting what I know from an unbiased position without a horse in the race but all anyone wants to do is argue with me like I'm the problem and call me a shill. Whatever. I'm deleting my comments and staying the fuck out of this thread. Here are the possibilities of what's going on:

  • MoviePass sent a message to everyone's apps that included the new terms of service. If you recently cancelled your account and then clicked accept on that, that may have been you consenting to un-cancel your account. If you did that on accident, check again and try re-cancelling.

  • Some people are saying MoviePass may have accidentally sent this e-mail out to more people than it intended to. It's possible if you got this e-mail your account is still cancelled because you never clicked accept. Try re-cancelling anyways.

  • I guess it's possible that MoviePass is digging themselves into a giant legal hole by un-cancelling your accounts without your permission. Seems like a dumb thing to do and then e-mail everyone and alert them of it, but you guys seem pretty dead set on this option.

Honestly, this seems like a poorly run company being really unorganized and not communicating and hoping that people click accept and then forget about it. But believe whatever conspiracy theory you want I'm done with all of this it's fucking 4:30 in the morning. Just take whatever information you read from a random redditor with a grain of salt. My best advice is to keep a record of letting the company know you want to cancel, try cancelling again, and keep an eye on your bank statements when the billing cycle comes through again.
