Totally underrated in the grand scheme of things imo. It has aged so well.
Seriously. It's an iconic score yet hardly mentioned comparatively to some other scores of the same period (Jaws, Star Wars, Terminator, Planet of the Apes.. to name a few). It's haunting and thrilling in a way that no other entry in the Alien series ever topped or came close to matching IMO.
I am a fan of the other scores in the Alien series but I know what you mean about the iconic sound of the first movie. I might not think I'm in the mood for Alien but when I hear the opening music I'm immediately sold.
Haunting yes, but I'd give thrilling to Aliens. Love James Horner. RIP
The "Around the corner" strobe light scene with Ripley at the end of the first film is still not matched by any of the score of Aliens IMO. Well, except for when they re-used that music cue in Aliens. The Aliens score is aces though and I'm just playing favorites.

It works but I find it a bit dated, like something you would only ear in a 70s horror movie. I love the Alien score though, it does have moments of brilliance.
But for pure thrills, I'm sticking to Aliens.
The guy was gifted, my favorite composer
Intrada released the complete score a few years ago. The original main titles are hauntingly beautiful.
My favourite track is ‘In Eternity’, which plays during Kane’s ‘funeral’. It’s a sombre, foreboding track and is really fitting to the moment during the movie.
One of the joys of playing Alien Isolation was the original Goldsmith theme plays during key moments of the game. It feels more like a true sequel to the original film.
One of his best scores — right up there with Star Trek TMP, The Omen, and The Ghost and the Darkness.
Damn shame it got a bit mutilated in the picture.
Anyone wanting to read a bit more on the music of the movie should check out this article.
Not to mention his classic score for Chinatown he wrote in just 10 days!
I also love his work on [The Shadow (1994).] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cE68oB02wbs) Underrated movie, even more underrated score.
You know what else was underrated? The main theme from THE FLY 2
I hope they add a Jerry Goldsmith Restoration Cut for the next Blu-ray release.
Well worth the watch.
